Research in the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Technology

Robot at desk

Research in the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Technology scored very highly in the recent Research Assessment Exercise result and this is reflected in the hosting of three and a half Applied Research Centres (ARCs) in the Faculty. The RAE rating found that 90% of our research in Engineering is of international standards (45% international excellence, 40% recognised internationally and 5% world leading), 10% is of national standards. A very good result which confirms the Faculty's progression up the ratings for engineering awards in a number of university comparison listings.

Our strong position and long history of delivering high quality computing awards was reflected in the fact that 75% of research in Computer Science & Informatics is of international standards (30% international excellence & 45% recognised internationally), 25% is of national standards.

These results are confirmation that the faculty’s research strategy is a successful one that exploits the strengths, links and synergy that exist between the Faculty's various applied research areas.  For example the EPSRC funded Human Adaptive Mechatronics work involves mechatronics and robotics - both areas of engineering and human interaction mediated through complex software (computer science).

The following ARCs will help our research teams to build  on existing strengths whilst bringing them closer to UK and international industry.

  • Mobile Fusion Centre (MFC)
  • Centre for Information, Intelligence and Security Systems (CIISS),
  • Staffordshire Centre for Energy Efficient Systems (SCEES)
  • Centre for Media Arts and Technology (C-MAT) is in partnership with Arts Media and Design

Centre for Information, Intelligence and Security Systems (CIISS)

The mission of CIISS is to research, design and develop innovative solutions to real-life problems in the areas of security, digital forensics, healthcare, education, business intelligence and environmental protection. Staffordshire Centre for Energy Efficient Systems (SCEES)

Global warming and climate change agenda has made energy systems a world wide central issue. The problems to be solved are not limited to the harnessing of renewable energy sources. The efficient use of traditional energy supplies is equally important. Read more about Staffordshire Centre for Energy Efficient Systems (SCEES) »

Mobile Fusion Centre (MFC)

The Mobile Fusion Centre integrates research across the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Technology with other ARCs in the University and builds on the Faculty's robotics and mobile devices strengths. Read more about Mobile Fusion Centre (MFC) »

C-MAT Media, Arts and Technologies

The Centre for Media, Arts and Technologies (C-MAT) is a research centre based around the combined expertise in all aspects of the digital media in the Faculties of Arts, Media and Design and of Computing, Engineering and Technology. Read more about C-MAT Media, Arts and Technologies »
