Broadcast Newsrooms

Introduction
The Broadcast Newsrooms form part of the Media Centre within the Faculty.
The Media Centre has three main departments, which are housed across three buildings on the College Road Campus. In the main Production and Post Production area we have a wide range of portable equipment, filming and recording facilities and post production to allow you to create film and sound projects to a high quality. In Animation we have facilities to produce a range of animated products including Stop Motion, Motion Capture, Chroma keying, Line testing as well as the latest animation software to produce cutting edge animated graphics. In the Broadcast Newsroom we have a state of the art TV news set for producing news bulletins as well as editing and newsgathering facilities alongside the Radio studios. Our print newsroom provides a real newspaper environment to generate and create news content.
What facilities are available?
Our Broadcast Newsroom consists of a number of areas, encouraging our students to become competent in a range of broadcast skills employed in professional broadcasting newsrooms. We promote a strong professional working environment supported by qualified Media Centre technicians. We work closely in conjunction with the Broadcast Journalists to host a weekly news day that is broadcast into the University. We try to project a professional working area akin to industry standards and our newsroom is at the centre of this. We have ten Apple Final Cut Pro editing suites and 35 dual boot iMacs running Adobe Audition for audio editing with Burli for professional news workflow application, and Microsoft Office for producing the necessary paperwork. Our newsroom is used for hands-on-teaching and training, but we are keen to promote its professional working capacity and encourage students to do the same.
TV News Set
The news set reflects a similar set-up to that found within the broadcast industry to familiarise our students with the working practices in TV news. We have a 3-dolly camera set-up, auto-cues and an industry standard playout system with indigo mixer. This is incorporated into a fully equipped gallery with coms, a news desk and sofas set to provide a range of presentation options.
Radio Studios
All 3 of our radio studios operate with RCS Master Control, Burli, Adobe Audition and Myriad to match the commercial industry standard. The studios are fully equipped with mixing desks, mics, recording software and ISDN lines for phone interviews. These studios are used regularly in conjunction with the news days and are bookable to students for their own personal projects.
Print Newsroom
The print newsroom houses 31 Apple Machines complete with Quark, Word, Photoshop and other relevant software. The Print Journalists regularly create magazines and paper layouts for both personal and professional use. This area is used as both a teaching facility and practical workspace.
Staff
We have a highly dedicated team who technically support all departments of the Media Centre. All of our front line technical staff have been trained in Apples Final Cut Pro series, along with many other software applications. All our technical staff are media graduates and many still undertake their own media work.
