What it's about

Students study for the Diploma in Advice Work and Law for the first two years and on completing the Diploma can study for a further year to achieve the LLB. The LLB is clearly oriented towards those wishing to work in legal contexts, however, there is an option to transfer to a degree in Advice work.

What you do

At Level 1, you study introductory modules concerned with the English Legal System and the Law of Contract, Introduction to Social Policy, Values and Negotiation, Advocacy and Interviewing Skills.
In the second year, there are modules in the Law of Tort and Benefits Advice, as well as options from: The Contract of Employment, Consumer Law, Social Welfare Law and Practice Housing Law and Advice and Debt Advice. There are also online option modules in Family Law, Discrimination Law, and Immigration and Asylum. During the second year, time is spent working in an advice-giving agency. This placement might be conducted within Citizens Advice Bureau, a Housing Association or organization for the homeless, a women’s refuge, a Local Authority, a specialist advice agency or a Law centre.

Level 3 of the LLB, comprises the remaining professional core subjects, namely Criminal Law, EC Law, Land Law and Equity and Trusts.
Students transferring to advice work, typically study modules in Research and Social Policy. A key component of the third year is the dissertation that can be used to focus on a socio-legal or advice-related issue.

Teaching takes a variety of forms including lectures, seminars, workshops, student learning materials and simulations. Online modules are available, providing flexibility of study mode. Assessment methods include essays, skills projects and examinations.

Where next?

As well as Citizens Advice Bureau, there are voluntary advice centres, neighbourhood offices and highly specialised advice giving agencies (such as consumer protection organisations and immigration advice agencies). Students may also, if they prefer, choose to work in the more traditional legal settings for which the LLB is an appropriate preparation.
