Potteries, Public Health and Karl Marx
Title: Potteries, Public Health and Karl Marx
Date: Thursday, 19th January 2012, 5.00 for 5.30pm – 7pm
Venue: LT004, Ashley Building, Staffordshire University, Leek Road Campus,
Stoke-on-Trent, ST4 2DF
This is the first in a series of professorial public health lectures hosted by the Faculty of Health at Staffordshire University.
Professor Zafar Iqbal will argue that an understanding of local history is vital to inform the future transformation of Stoke-on-Trent.
This session will explore the public health legacy of the Potteries; give a historical context by examining how the experience of local pottery and mining workers was used by Karl Marx when writing Das Kapital to highlight the poor working and living conditions of local people in the 19th C, as part of his treatise to expose the exploitation of the working classes; and finally to look at the way that the city’s new Mandate for Change could create opportunities, not only for economic growth, but also potentially for increased health gain for the city as well.

Commemorating Holocaust Memorial Day 2012
Title: 'Speak Up, Speak Out'

Venue: The Film Theatre, Staffordshire University, College Road, Stoke-on-Trent, ST4 2DE

Staffordshire University is hosting this commemorative event in conjunction with Stoke-on-Trent City Council and Staffordshire University Students’ Union.
Holocaust Memorial Day is commemorated internationally on 27th January each year. This date was chosen, as it is the anniversary of the day in 1945 on which the Soviet Army liberated the largest Nazi concentration camp – Auschwitz-Birkenau.
Each year Holocaust Memorial Day urges us to pause and reflect on what can happen when racism, prejudice and exclusionary behaviour are left unchecked. It is a day on which we take time to remember the lessons of the past in order to bring hope for the future. This year’s theme is ‘Speak Up, Speak Out‘
During the ceremony guests will be given the opportunity to add their “Speak up, Speak out’ messages to our HMD memorial trees, which were planted behind the Film Theatre at last year’s event.
The event will also be used to launch the official partnership between Staffordshire University, Stoke-on-Trent City Council and the Art Venue CIC to promote the region’s ties to the community of Lidice.
